43 Gilmour Avenue, Golden Triangle, Ottawa

Note the Heritage plaque (and the kitty on the porch next door) —

"The City of Ottawa intends to designate the property at 43 Gilmour Street, also known as Clarke House, under the Ontario Heritage Act for its architectural and historical significance. Built in 1898, it exemplifies the simple houses erected for downtown workers during Centretown's late 19th-century residential boom. The house, a modest two-and-a-half-story brick structure with a gambrel roof and a veranda, reflects the tastes and needs of its original owner and later occupants and makes a significant contribution to the streetscape. Objections to this designation must be received by the City Clerk by September 25, 1995."

At some point in time I hope to get to the OPL to check out Marc Lowell's booklet on the history of this address.

I assume that Lowell availed himself of deed records for a build date and the name "Clarke." Neither the address nor the name appears in the 1898-1899 Might Directory. 1901 lists "O'Leary Francis bldr CAR".

The present build could be an elaboration upon a simpler design.

43 Gilmour appears on Goad's 1895 plan in an update pasted onto the sheet some time before 1901. The house is depicted as small wooden 1½-storey building, likely under a front-gabled peaked roof, with a single-storey summer kitchen in the rear.
