There was a time when Metcalfe Street was more of a prestigious address than it is today. Early in the 20th century, the section between Somerset West up to Sparks was dense with the "surgeries" of doctors and dentists, making it Ottawa's version of Harley Street.
Some five blocks to the south, in the summer of 1939, on a previously vacant lot, construction of the twin Metcalfe Terrace Apartments was nearing completion. Occupancy was anticipated in the fall. The announcement below appeared in the Ottawa Citizen on August 28 of that year. Twelve days later, on September 10, Canada would enter WWII.
