64 Lewis, Golden Triangle, Ottawa

Small in front, long and narrow — the Directories indicate construction some time between 1901 and 1908, the latter volume listing two William McEwens, a father and son it would seem, the son being a jeweller.

Goad 1912 shows an all-wood 1½ with a 1-storey summer kitchen behind. At some point in time that rear structure was raised to a full 2 storeys. Street View shows that the present front siding was installed some time between 2020 and 2024.

Note how the side wall on the viewer's left splays outward slightly at the base. Also the porch sags somewhat. Such is the way of old wooden houses. We often notice swaybacked rooflines on older side-gabled builds.

Here is a clipping from the Ottawa Journal, 1911-08-09. I came across several notices from April of that year regarding a lost diamond solitaire ring. Marion must have felt awful.

"Quiet but interesting ..." ouch.*

*Re "a travelling suit of ble." I sense the writer's backhanded attempt to lend an air of elegance to the "interesting" fact that the bride did not wear a gown to her church wedding."Blé," which could well be pronounced "blech," is French for wheat. Marion wore a beige suit. See some smart examples on this page, including one in blé.
