236 Queen Elizabeth Driveway, the Glebe

City Directories and aerial photos bracket this build to 1923-1928. The house faces the Rideau Canal across some 80 metres of parkland.

The first occupants were a young couple, R. Chauncey Bangs and his wife Dorothy (Page.) Chauncey, a figure-skater of local repute, worked for his father (Chauncey Sr.) as a clerk at the latter's Coal and Coke company. Given the marriage date and the construction time-frame, I'm going to guess that the home was a wedding gift from father to son.

The announcement is from Ottawa Citizen, October 1, 1927. The notice placed by the family business dates to the following spring. The 10-storey Ottawa Electric Building at 56 Sparks St. stands to this day.
